In various presentations and workshops, experts informed the audience about the possibilities and applications of this trending technology as well as various funding programs.

Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, was the focus of an event at the University of Paderborn that took place on July 2, 2019; the event was also the venue where the recently established Paderborn Institute for Additive Manufacturing (PIAF) was introduced. In various presentations and workshops, experts informed the audience about the possibilities and applications of this trending technology as well as various funding programs.
On behalf of the Executive Committee, Simone Probst welcomed the attendees who were primarily from the areas of industry and business: “PIAF’s establishment as a central scientific unit can be attributed to the great success of our university’s Direct Manufacturing Research Center (DMRC). As a result, we are excited to be able to introduce additive manufacturing to an even broader public.” The DMRC is an interdisciplinary body of the university’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, whose research goal is the enhancement of the application of additive manufacturing processes in the production of end products.
Dr. Christian Lindemann, DMRC and PIAF Managing Director, and the organizer of the conference, introduced the Institute and the core technologies of networked manufacturing. “Patent applications in the field of 3D printing have been increasing rapidly since 2012. This technology of the future allows companies to work more efficiently, for example, by reducing cost and weight, and by manufacturing without the use of tools, which makes them extremely flexible. Not only engineers work together at PIAF, but also IT specialists, chemists, and scientists of other disciplines to jointly advance research and science in this field. Also, a number of well-known industry partners are involved in the transfer of technology and knowledge.”
Success stories about regional medium-size companies as well as a spin-off from the University of Paderborn were also presented at the meeting. it’s OWL introduced the transfer voucher for the promotion of regional companies. Condor Group provided details about the successful introduction of the technology at Condor with the help of the transfer voucher. The conference was rounded off with a guideline depicting the path to the first “printed building component.” During a lab walk, conference participants had the opportunity to experience the technology live.
The event was organized in cooperation with the technology network it’s OWL, which is an association of all OWL universities, research institutes, and about 175 companies.
